From the Mountains to the Sea

This past month I have been far and wide in Maine. The first week of August was spent up in the Katahdin area mostly for vacation but a little bit for painting too. I had the chance to go into Katahdin Woods and Waters for a day with Caren Marie Michel to paint. We couldn't believe the magnificent view of Katahdin from these lands east Baxter State Park that have just recently been opened to the public. KWW has done a fantastic job building a loop road with outlooks and even a couple of outhouses. I look forward to further exploring this area that was once really only traveled by loggers. We each made two painting that day; one before and one after a thunderstorm. We watched the storm cross from the east rolling over South Turner and Katahdin and then off across Millinocket Lake and Ambajejus Lake to beyond. We need to verify but may have been the first plein air painters to paint these views. These are my two paintings from that day.

Last weekend was spent way down east. My husband had two gigs to play ( half moon jug band ) during the Pirate Invasion of Lubec part of the Eastport Pirate Festival. Eastport invades Lubec by land, air and sea! The townspeople lob water balloons at the invaders and then everyone goes up to the bars and has a few drinks. I went out and painted while this was happening but I did see the airplanes buzzing the town and many pirate clad motorcyclists leaving town later in the day. Most of the pirates come over the bay from Eastport in their boats. We have been in Eastport during the festival before and I will tell you it is a fun time. Most of the events take place next weekend so there is time to get your costume ready and head down east for some fun. Click the link above for more info. While the town was under siege I was out on South Lubec Road working on this:

The next day was overcast but I managed a study of Gullivers Hole at Quoddy Head State Park.
